Colorful satirical cartoon showing a sweating Earth surrounded by generic people whose pants are literally on fire as they make excuses for lying, including “It’s just my truth,” “I was taken out of context,” and “I didn’t say that.”

Is It Hot in Here, or Is Everybody Lying

A Completely Unscientific Explanation For Why Everything Is Getting Hotter.

I think I may have figured out why it’s so hot.

Growing up, we had a pretty simple system.
You told one lie – you lied.
You told two lies – you were a liar.
And once people thought you were a liar, there was this little thing called credibility that became increasingly difficult to maintain.

We even had a highly sophisticated childhood accountability system:
“Liar, liar, pants on fire.”
Which brings me to my theory.

Have you noticed how ridiculously hot it is lately?
Maybe we’ve been looking at this whole global warming thing wrong.
Maybe there are simply too many pants on fire.

Because apparently, we don’t lie anymore.
We misspeak.
We reframe.
We spin.
We clarify what we meant.
We share our truth.
We were taken out of context.
We don’t recall saying that.
And my personal favorite…
“That’s not what I said.”
While someone is literally playing the video of us saying it.

No wonder it’s 100 degrees outside.

But somewhere underneath the joke is something that really isn’t funny.
We’ve become so comfortable with dishonesty that sometimes even an obvious lie isn’t called a lie anymore.
And that should bother us.

Not just when it comes from politicians.
Not just from the media.
Not just from corporations, celebrities, leaders, or “the other side.”
From us.

Because truth still matters.
Credibility still matters.
Character still matters.

There’s a line in Scripture that simply says:
“Speak the truth.” – Ephesians 4:25
Believer or not, that seems like pretty solid advice.

So during this heat wave, maybe we should all do our part.
Tell the truth.
The pants you save may be your own.
