What If We Choose to Grow?

A Reflection on the First Day of GEL: The courage to show up.
The willingness to be real. The possibility of becoming more.

You walk into a room. Not entirely sure what awaits you. Excited…Nervous…Confident…Yet a little apprehensive…Maybe even a little afraid. You know why you came. Or at least you think you do.

You’re greeted with a smile…A welcome…An introduction. You find your seat, look around the room, and begin to wonder. Who are these people? What brought them here? And what might we become together?

Some walk in knowing others. Some walk in knowing no one. Some seem completely comfortable. Others are still finding their footing. And slowly, the room begins to fill.

Names. Titles. Organizations. Positions. Accomplishments. All the things we use to introduce ourselves. But none of those things really tells us who is sitting across the table. Because a title doesn’t tell your story. A position doesn’t reveal your struggles. And an accomplishment doesn’t expose your doubts.

Then people begin to speak. Some with confidence…Some with uncertainty…Some with carefully chosen words…Others with voices barely above a whisper.

And you begin to realize something…Every person in this room has a story bigger than the title they carry. Stories of victories and disappointments. Of lessons learned and mistakes made. Of moments when they felt ready to lead, and moments when they wondered if they belonged. And maybe that’s where this journey really begins.

Not with what we’ve accomplished. Not with what we know. Not even with where we’re going. But with the courage to acknowledge where we actually are.

Because growth doesn’t begin with pretending. It begins with being real.

Real about our strengths…Real about our weaknesses…Real about what we’ve figured out…And real about what we’re still trying to understand.

Then comes the challenge. Not simply to attend. Not simply to listen. Not simply to add another accomplishment to a résumé. But to choose. Will we choose to grow?

Will we listen when someone challenges our thinking? Will we speak even when our voice shakes? Will we admit we don’t have all the answers? And perhaps the hardest question: Will we allow others to see who we really are, rather than who we’ve worked so hard to appear to be?

Because authentic leadership isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about having the courage to keep figuring things out. Together. Not because we’re all alike…Not because we share the same experiences…Not because we agree on everything…But because we don’t.

And what if those differences aren’t obstacles to overcome, but opportunities to discover? What if the person sitting across the table sees something we’ve never considered? What if the voice we almost overlook is the very voice we most need to hear? What if leadership isn’t about becoming more like someone else, but becoming more honestly and courageously ourselves?

Not cookie-cutter leaders. Not carbon copies. Not people molded into one acceptable version of leadership. But individuals willing to grow without losing what makes them who they are.

Because outside this room, the world isn’t waiting for another title. It’s waiting for leadership. A world divided. A world changing. A world filled with uncertainty, pain, disagreement, and possibility. A world that needs people willing to step up…Step in…And sometimes step outside the comfortable places where they’ve learned to feel secure.

Leaders willing to listen before speaking. To understand before judging. To serve rather than simply be seen. Leaders who recognize that strength doesn’t mean never being vulnerable. Confidence doesn’t mean never having doubts. And leadership doesn’t mean you’ve somehow arrived. It means you’re still willing to journey.

So here we are. Day one. A room full of people who walked through the same door carrying very different stories. We don’t know what this year will bring. Which conversations will challenge us. Which relationships will change us. Or which assumptions we’ll have to reconsider. But perhaps that’s the beauty of beginning. We don’t have to know everything this journey will become to choose to be fully present in it. We only have to be willing.

Willing to show up. Willing to be honest. Willing to be challenged. Willing to encourage. Willing to listen. Willing to grow.  And willing to recognize that sometimes the greatest thing we bring into a room isn’t our experience, our knowledge, or our accomplishments. It’s our authentic selves. Not the polished version. Not the carefully protected version. Not the version we think everyone expects. Just us. Still learning. Still becoming. Still discovering.

And perhaps a year from now, we’ll look back and realize something changed. Not because someone handed us the answers. But because we became willing to ask better questions. Of ourselves. Of one another. And of the world we’re called to serve.

What a year this could be. What a difference we could make. What kind of leaders might we become? Not if we all become the same. But if we find the courage to become more authentically ourselves while allowing others to help us grow. Because maybe the greatest lesson this year won’t be how to lead others better. Maybe it will be discovering how to become more honestly ourselves.

The door has opened. The journey has begun. And the question is no longer
whether we have the opportunity to grow. The question is whether we have the courage to let it happen.

And that choice begins today.
