Confessions from the Uber Front Seat
Things I Learned Somewhere Between “Pregame” and “Postgame”
There are weekends where you relax… recharge… maybe catch up on life. And then there are weekends where you drive Uber and accidentally enroll in a live, unfiltered masterclass on humanity. No syllabus. No warning. Just a steady stream of passengers who are equal parts hilarious, honest, and slightly concerning.
By the end of it, I wasn’t just a driver…I was a counselor, a referee, a witness, and at one point…a reluctant medical consultant. And here’s what I learned.
– New Year’s Resolutions Have No Expiration Date
“What’s your New Year’s resolution?” “My New Year’s resolution is to listen to more Michael Bublé.”
This was asked… in mid-April. At first, I was confused. Then I realized… this might actually be genius.
Why limit personal growth to January? Why not wake up on April 17th and say, “You know what? Today feels like a Bublé kind of life pivot.”
Honestly… I respect it.
– Uber Drivers Are Apparently Also Urgent Care
“I cut myself shaving really bad tonight… do you want to see a picture?”
There are moments in life where time slows down. This was one of them. Before I could even respond…the phone was already halfway to my face. And just like that, I was diagnosing razor technique at a red light.
But beneath the unexpected visual…was something real: People don’t just want to show you their highlight reel…sometimes they want to show you their battle scars. Even if those scars… happened 20 minutes ago in a poorly lit bathroom.
– Relationship Status: It’s… Complicated++
“These three are my girlfriends” – “we’re like sister wives.” – “I don’t want wives… just girlfriends.”
At this point, I stopped trying to understand and just focused on driving safely. But it did hit me: People are redefining relationships in real time…with confidence levels that far exceed their long-term planning.
Connection is still the goal…the structure is just… under construction.
– College Will Humble You… Quickly
“I wanted to be a lawyer… but college is way harder than I thought. It’s not like high school… now I’m not sure.”
That one landed. Because you could hear the moment where confidence met reality…and reality said, “Yeah… we’re gonna need more from you.”
We’ve all had that moment – where the dream is still alive…but it’s now asking for effort we didn’t fully plan for.
– The Weekend Is Apparently a Competitive Sport
“If I don’t start partying tonight, it ruins the whole weekend.”
“It’s not really a night unless it has a pregame… goes into overtime… and ends with a postgame.”
Some people have routines. Some people have traditions. These people have a playoff bracket. And I couldn’t help but think…What if we put that same level of strategy and commitment into things that actually move our lives forward?
(Although… I will say… the consistency was impressive.)
– “Left Unread” Is a Modern-Day Crisis
“He left me unread all night… does that mean he’s done with me?”
I had to pause internally. Because I grew up in a time where if someone didn’t respond…you just assumed they were busy… or avoiding you quietly. Now it’s a full emotional event.
But underneath the terminology was something timeless: The fear of being ignored. The question of whether you matter. Same feelings…just upgraded with notifications.
– There Is a Fine Line Between “Awesome Night” and “We Need a Plan”
At one point, a very enthusiastic (and very unsteady) young man was helped into the car. I gently said, “Hey… this might be a sign of one shot too many.”
Immediate response: “No… this is a sign of an awesome night.”
And there it is. Perspective. Some people see warning signs…others see trophies.
– Confidence Levels May Vary… Based on Beverage Intake
“You may think I look old… but I don’t look a day over 30.”
Now, I’m not here to debate that. But I will say this: There was a level of confidence in that statement that most people spend years trying to achieve. And it made me wonder…
What if we believed in ourselves that boldly…without needing a drink to get there?
– Final Thought: The Backseat Might Be One of the Realest Places on Earth
Here’s what I walked away with:
Behind every funny moment…every questionable decision…every slightly chaotic conversation…There’s a person trying to figure life out.
Trying to belong…Trying to feel something…Trying to matter.
And for a brief moment…they say it out loud…in the backseat of a stranger’s car.
No filter…No script…Just real life… with a little extra volume.
And maybe that’s the takeaway:
Sometimes the most honest version of people doesn’t show up in meetings, or church, or social media…It shows up somewhere between the pregame and the postgame…talking to an Uber driver who didn’t realize he signed up for a front-row seat to humanity.
And if nothing else…I now know two things for sure:
1. It’s never too late for a New Year’s resolution.
2. And apparently… I don’t look a day over 30.
I’ll take the win.
